The great plateau of rock topped in terms of altitude by Scafell Pike stretches out in several directions and in the north-east ends a mile away in the rocky buttress of Great End. The upper slopes are a wasteland of boulders, looking for all the world like some kind of alien landscape, especially when locked in snow and ice. With Scafell Pike so close, few climb Great End, yet the view from the top is worth every step. As the master fellwalker, A.
